How to Prepare Your Team for Temporary Staff

A temporary assignment works best when the worksite is ready for the person arriving. A short plan for the first shift can help your supervisor explain the job, answer questions, and keep expectations clear.

Confirm the assignment details before day one

Review the job duties, worksite address, shift hours, expected assignment length, and who the worker should ask for on arrival. Tell your Choice1Temps contact if a task, schedule, or requirement has changed since the original staffing request. If the role uses particular equipment or calls for credentials, describe those requirements clearly.

Choose one on-site point of contact

Identify a supervisor or lead who can greet the worker, explain the day’s priorities, and answer questions. Share where to report, how to enter the site, what to wear, and any relevant workplace instructions. Follow your normal site orientation and safety procedures for the actual work being assigned.

Start with clear tasks

On the first shift, show the worker the task, the expected output, and where to get help when something is unclear. Separate tasks that can begin right away from those that need more instruction. For production and warehouse work, explain the workflow and any equipment boundaries. For office or hospitality work, introduce the person to the team and the systems they will use.

Set a simple feedback rhythm

Check in early enough to correct a misunderstanding before it becomes a larger problem. If the assignment changes, discuss the new duties, schedule, or location with your staffing contact. Let the worker know who will give day-to-day direction and how questions should be raised.

If the role could become permanent

For a temp-to-hire arrangement, discuss the possibility and the evaluation process with your Choice1Temps contact. Avoid implying that a permanent position is guaranteed. Give feedback based on the duties and expectations you shared at the start.

Keep the conversation local
