Resumes – Selling Yourself To Your Employer
Resumes in this day and age allow you to show off all of your strongest assets. Doing so in a clear, concise, and prepared manner is important as the stress of an interview can make anyone nervous.
We’re in a highly competitive job market, and employers often skim through resumes which makes it difficult for you to stand out. It is crucial that you have a resume that highlights your best qualities in order to pull ahead of the race when it comes to the job search.
Success in an interview often depends on your resume!
Here are a few things to keep in mind while crafting your resume:
1. Keep it short.
Your resume should be able to fit on a single typed page. If you use smaller fonts, margin spacing, and other formatting techniques it can help you meet this goal. It is harder than it seems to trim excess information, so you should make every word count!
2. References on request – Don’t say it.
You do not need this as it is automatically assumed. You should always bring your references with you to your interview as well as a copy of your resume! An employer will often ask you about specific parts of your resume, so having one yourself will make answering pointed questions easier.
3. Provide relevant information.
Employers are usually not interested in awards or education experience that doesn’t pertain to the work you are applying for and it will not help you land the job. Provide as much relevant information whenever possible in order for you to achieve the best results.
4. Personalize your resumes!
Don’t send out the same generic resume to all companies or you could end up hurting your chances. If you alter each one to most closely match the position you are applying to, it will increase your visibility and give you an edge on your competition. Personalizing your resume is often the difference between being noticed or being passed up on.
These are just a few of the many techniques for you to keep in mind as you prepare for the job hunt and if needed you can find a more involved tutorial here.
