Temp Agency For Hire – The Basics
Whether you need work quickly or have had little luck in the current job market, a temp agency can help someone find employment quickly. With the flexibility to try out multiple environments you can ensure where you work is good fit for you.
The application process to start can be cumbersome. Often once it is finished there is a high chance you will be placed immediately. Some things to prepare before you go:
- Identification – You will need I-9 valid identification, such as a passport, or State issue ID/license and a Social Security card. These must be in good standing, and not expired.
- Online application – some agencies have an electronic application which will need to be done before hand. Doing this at home where you are free to get information together can save you time in the long run. (You can apply to us online here!)
- Your resume – This isn’t necessary, but can often open you up to a lot more possibilities for better work and better pay. Bring one if you can! (You can read up on some tips to building a resume here!)
Knowing a good temp agency from a poor one
A good temp agency will work with their applicants to find what they are looking for. Employment that suits their skills, and will promote a long term relationship between employers and workers, with the eventual goal of full time employment and a promising career.
Just because you are a ‘temp worker’ does not mean you are worth less than someone hired direct. You have skills, value, and worth. A poor agency will attempt to put you somewhere because they need an opening filled. Often contrary to what is best for the worker.
If you find your agency places you for work inconsistently, this should raise some red flags. Working one day a week here or two days there will not get you where you need to be. Bring up your concerns, or look elsewhere.
Your temp agency should offer you benefits such as health insurance, sick time accrual, and workman’s compensation should you be injured on the job. Often there will be a trial period before robust benefits, such as sick time, will become active. (You can read more about our staffing beliefs here!)
If you need work immediately and don’t care what you must do this could be a good fit for you. If you are looking for work that will accentuate your skills you do not have to accept the first position offered. That could just be setting yourself up for failure. (We have many positions available, you can see them all at our jobs feed!)
Preparing for your interview
A temp agency will often conduct a pre-interview on site to get a feel for your skills, your availability and your preferences for work. A recruiter will go through your application, review your resume and present offers that fit your needs.
During this process, the recruiter should also let you know of the type of work environment the positions is, dress requirements, safety requirements, and any other details. If you have any questions or concerns, please bring them up to the recruiter!
The client looking for workers will also receive your resume, and if interested, will contact the temp agency to set up an on-site interview. A temp agency can also have locations directly on site for a more direct flow of communication. This allows for instant feedback and quicker interviews. (Feel free to read more about our on site staffing services here!)
Accepting a position
You’ve accepted a position! Now what? The most important thing you can do is show up for work! If you arrive at the location and for some reason the work is not what you expected, contact your temp agency! The worst thing you can do is walk off the job, or never go back. If you find yourself needing quick employment in the future the agency may refuse to do business with you.
After a time on the job your employer may decide they want to take you on full time. This is great! You’ve found work that you excel at. You’ve shown fundamental responsibilities resulting in your new employer valuing these traits in you. These hires often come with increased responsibilities, as well as pay rate increase!
